Crack a beer, lay back, and put on the latest from Hollyy

Although it’s only Tuesday, I feel burnt from this week already. The lock-down keeps dragging on and we all are beginning to feel restless, powerless, and pent up. We are close to a year since the first shelter in place orders were enacted and it’s been all too easy to get caught up in grinding at work, school, and hobbies. Last night, I needed the relaxation and clarity that Hollyy provided me, so thanks to them for helping me finish this article.

The soul-inspired quintet hails from Chicago bringing authentic old-school blues, soul, and rock and roll inspired tracks. Their singles remind me of the classics my parents used to play from greats such as Van Morrison, The Moody Blues, and Sam Cooke. It’s so easy to get caught up in perfectly processed pop and rap that a well-made classic sound comes across as fresh.

I know a lot of people have placed us into a retro-soul box [...] But we also try to incorporate elements of the modern music we really like, from hip-hop to pop to psychedelic rock. [...] We want to write music like a lot of our heroes from a time before us while keeping fresh in the modern musical landscape.

The instrumentation is superb and the melodies feel new even with the time-tested soul/rock sound. Their latest two singles come from their upcoming EP Miss the Feeling. “Sailing”, released last week, is more upbeat and carefree, “a song about escape and a longing for more out of one's life”. My favorite of the two is “Hesitate”, which is more reserved at the beginning with a strong finish that lifted me straight out of my funk (excuse the pun). The message resonated with me, making it clear that you can’t wait around, you have to do something, and that opportunity is around the corner. Crack a beer, lay back, and put on the latest from Hollyy. Everything will be alright and work out, just have to keep moving.
