INTERVIEW: Keli Holiday Kicks Off 2021 by Bringing all the Positive Vibes that this Year Truly Needs

Updated: Mar 12, 2021

Keli Holiday, the side project of Adam Hyde from legendary Australian Duo Peking Duk, releases his first single as a solo artist, ‘We Don’t Have to Know’ embodying the spirit of living freely in his new music video.

We Don’t Have To Know’ is a melting pot of all Hyde’s influences of rock-n-roll, psychedelic feels, and raw recording style that much encompasses his unique aura.

The record – and official video - is a homage to energy and sounds of the west coast of America in the summer, whilst never losing sight of the magnetic personality of Hyde that he’s become so well known for in Australia.

We asked Adam what his initial idea was on starting a solo project, and here’s what we discovered:

Essentially, Adam Hyde finished doing a Peking Duk tour in the USA and spent a lot of time in New York as the base of that tour. He remembers,

“Reminiscing on a lot of New Order and Joy Division records that my father would play when I was a kid, but it never really connected like it did on that tour - it really spoke to me. I clearly remember looking out the window of the van in New York city listening to New Order, and it was romantic in my mind - a beautiful nostalgic feeling. Something clicked in my head at that moment”

Adam shared he bought a “shitty little guitar” after the tour, and everyone else on the team went on holiday, so he decided to turn some music from his shitty guitar similar to the New Order stuff that he had been listening to, while also grabbing influences from a lot of HipHop, NYC, UK, and Melbourne underground.

Before he knew it, he had 6 of these “dusty shitty sounding demos where [he] sang and programmed all of the drums just to try to bang it together."

Since then, “It's been an honest, fun journey and a refreshing breath of air that I needed.”

The music video and project itself is joyous and it feels like a holiday, it’s just peace in the sun and having a good time with your friends.

We asked Adam what the inspiration was behind the music video of ‘We Don’t Have to Know’ and found out it’s actually such a beautiful nostalgic feeling from Adam’s past.

Adam met Reuben Styles, his Peking Duk counterpart, at the skatepark when they were kids, and he is bringing in that skateboarding and free-spirited inspiration into his solo project.

“Skateboarding has always been a huge part of my life - I watch skate videos all the time and I love the culture around it. Those kids in the video for ‘We Don’t Have to Know.’ were like looking in the mirror from when I was a kid just running around and not giving a fuck about tomorrow. It's such beautifully real freedom. You're liberated without thinking about anything, that's something we all miss and I wanted to bring that out.”

Overall, what do you want your fans to feel from your music and video?

“This song to me encapsulates the sheer amount of joy that I’ve had creating this project. It's been me and my friends jamming. None of it has felt forced or like a second work. I am straight up vibing and you can hear us in the video straight up laughing in the studio. I think it’s a perfect introduction to the project. At the end of the day, that’s me, and that’s the introduction into me and my personality.”

Keli Holiday will be releasing his next single on March 26th called ‘Where Do You Feel’ and shot the music video with Taylor Bonin, who does all the videography for The Growlers.

His next single and video will encompass beautiful imagery of Keli Holiday in a totally fucked-up outfit in Venice, showcasing his free-spirited, psychedelic influence of rock-n-roll and good vibes.
